More plan to buy Android phones than iPhones this spring

Apple sees rare reversal in future phone demand

Android may have overtaken the iPhone as the most sought-after smartphone platform in the US, ChangeWave found in its latest study. Of those planning to get a smartphone in the next 90 days, the most -- 30 percent -- expect it to be an Android device. Apple is still close but has just 29 percent of future buyers committing to an iPhone.

Researchers noted that the jump was five times more than what existed just in September and was triggered by devices. The Droid and a handful of other very high-profile Android phones, including HTC's Droid Eris and Nexus One, were launched at about the same time.

Competing platforms only continued to drop in interest, as only 13 percent expected to buy a BlackBerry (down from 18 percent) and Windows Mobile/Phone interest was down slightly to five percent. Palm has held steady at three percent.

In existing users, RIM has still held on to its lead but has had the gap narrowed further. Apple has reached an all-time high of 33 percent in the study where RIM saw a gradual decline to 33 percent. Palm has hit a low of 5 percent.

The iPhone still has a clearer lead in satisfaction, as 76 percent were "very satisfied" with the OS where 65 percent thought the same of Android. By manufacturer, however, Apple had a major lead as 77 percent liked Apple's handsets where only 41 percent were happy with next-best HTC.

Apple's surprising cooling in demand may reverse itself in the next study as June iPhone launches have usually rekindled any slumping interest, although this year the phone will have to run against more competitive Android devices like the HTC Evo 4G or Samsung Galaxy S.

I'm curious as to why more people

are looking for Android smartphones. I'd say it was either the older model 3GS is becoming stale compared to newer Android smartphones or people don't want to switch carriers. I'm thinking it's the latter case. I wish they'd tell the reasons why people are choosing Android. It doesn't make sense for very satisfied users to switch brands, so it must be first-time smartphone users that are jumping on the Android platform.

    Statisitcs

A 1% spread in a non-scientific survey means less than nothing. Why would a Mac centric site post such nonsense knowing full well the iPhone haters will use this article to pound away? Statistics can prove anything. anytime, depending on the desired results. Same goes for the financial analysts spouting off about Apple's market cap being higher than Walmart. It means absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things. Everybody is looking for data to confirm their biases. Reality is to be avoided at all costs. Only subjective biases are to be fed and nurtured. Philosophers have debated the perception and existence of reality for centuries. I see why.

Time to lower the low-end price with the new 3+4G model.

    Haha

Come on. This is inevitable. Google is going to beat Apple the same way Microsoft beat apple over a decade ago. The facts are strikingly similar. The clone will will ruin Apple once again.

    Wow, "just" 29%!

Exactly. And writing that "just 29 percent of future buyers committing to an iPhone" (emphasis on the "just") is simply bad journalism. So nothing new here.

You certainly use the term "journalism" loosely.

    Android

You will not find a bigger Apple lover than I.

But in 2011, android will beat out the iphone. Why? because google will put it on every POS phone that comes their way.

Think about it. Phone companies don't need to invest in their own OS!?! That's a huge money saver for them. Android will scale to non-smart phones as well.

I would rather have a phone that was thought about in every possible way (iPhone) and may only keep 25% of the market, than have apple fork over the OS to bad phones.

Apple is about experience. Android is about standard/ market share.

Apple knowingly sacrifices market / low cost share for experience.

    Obviously

Man, you all miss the point, don't you. Of course more people are planning on buying Android phones this spring. Who in their right mind is going to spend $$$ on an iPhone in the spring, when Apple has shown over the last three years that it releases a new iPhone in June?

Anyway, all those potential iPhone buyers are holding off because all their money is being spent on iPads.

And what makes you say it was non-scientific? Because it doesn't state that 540% of all respondents wanting an iphone? It is an actual research company, not just some web site with an on-line poll.

And, technically, a non-scientific survey means less than nothing regardless of the spread.

    Good Point, Plus One

Good point testudo, why buy an iPhone in the spring and not wait for June.

The other key here is Android is being offered in one form or another on all the other carriers.

We always say competition is good for the consumer. Androids success could be what motivates Apple to get onto the Verizon network. I know a lot of people just don't want to leave Verizon, but really like the iPhone.
